The instinct theory that pervades these comments tempts one to regard Freud's views on happiness in simplistic terms: instinctual discharge causes happiness and instinctual tension causes unplea- sure.
It seems, then, that in order to feel pleasure, one requires something more than instinctual discharge.
Elation might be related to instinctual discharge, but the latter is not sufficient to elicit it.
In effect then, the feeling of elation turns out to be the emotional concomitant of finding plea- surable instinctual discharge in the context of a positive and ego- supportive object relationship.
